Does anyone know if the numbers on the face of Morris speedos and how they relate to models, axle ratios etc is published anywhere?
My speedometer reads really fast (50mph is somewhere by the ignition light ) I know it's almost certainly the speedo itself but the number info' would be useful to have anyway.
A useful list of speedo numbers is published in "Original Morris Minor" by
Ray Newell. For example this says that your 1955 series 2 would have a
bronze faced speedo with one of the following numbers on the face.
SN 4401/9, SN 4406/08, or SN4477/10. These apply for the diff ratio of
5.375-1 and the chassis number should be somewhere between 293051 and
419860.
if the travellers been updated to the 1098cc drive train then it will read wrong. An early 1000 speedo (same colour but is slightly different face) will read right. doesnt look out of place. Have a look at teh gear box, if its ribbed then is 1000.
Above the milometer is the word 'SMITHS' and immediately above that, slightly to the left of centre is the SN number. The print is small but it
should be there. If it is missing I can only assume that you do not have a
Minor instrument.
