Oh by the way Ray, i actually measured a wheel nut today with my vernier calipers (how sad i know) and it is exactly 18mm!

Yes, 18mm is one of the few Metric sizes that is pretty much exactly the same as a Whitworth size (3/8 Whitworth in this case). You can get away with metric tools for some fixings, at a push as they can be close, but its much nicer to use the proper sized Whitworth tools. (and more satisfying!:lol: :) :P :wink: ) The correct Whitworth tool seems to work better when undoing fixings than the nearest metric, for some reason.

These tools can be had inexpensively from e-bay, or even car boot sales (or free from an older relative who used to timker with old cars) and several suppliers on the web sell whitworth/BSF sizes.

:) I've found that the most usefull bit of kit I've got is a set of "Aston Super wrench".,can fit all shapes and sizes, even stripped bolts or screws and its shallow depth case hardened jaws provide immense grip. Gets those really nasty, ruty little/big bolts open too. I don't think I've ever rounded a nut or bolt with them yet, no matter what condition. :wink: £25 here
