Re: Changing Main Bearing
So, we started the engine on tick over, probably for less than a minute, then gave it a short rev to see if the oil light would go out. Which it did not. Then realised we had not put the oil back in. There was a brief knocking noise. Overall, probably around a minute maybe slightly longer The engine...

Re: Changing Main Bearing
Thanks for all you replys. The engine was rebuilt but we did not change the timing chain. After running it we decided that the chain did need changing. So we pulled the engine out and drained the oil to change it after around 500 miles. Fitted a new chain put the engine back in and then started it. ...

Changing Main Bearing
After running the engine with no oil! (oops)I think I need to change the Big Ends and the Main Bearing. I know I can change the big ends with the engine in place, but can I change the mains? I seem to remember doing this a long time ago by pushing the mains out and then pushing new ones in, or am I ...

Re: Fitting timing chain
Wth the dots adjacent to each other the cam will set the valves for firing in cylinder 1. If, in this position, the rotor arm is pointing to cylinder 4 then that suggests that the distributor d.rive is 180 degrees out. Good luck. That's what I thought, but the Tappets are loose (rocking) on number ...

Fitting timing chain
When fitting the timing chain do the dots have to line up with no1 piston on TDC firing? Currently the dots line up with no4 piston at TDC firing? Is this Ok or do I have to move it. All the book says is line up the dots with the crank at 12 o’clock and the cam at 2 o’clock (Some say 1 o’clock)

Thanks, but can't see how it works as a looking washer? Think I will stick with the old.philthehill wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2024 12:00 pm The cupped washer is the new style starter dog locking washer.

Timing chain kit
Just brought a new Timing chain kit. It comes with a felt washer and a cupped shape metal washer. Where do these go, I don't remember taking them off.

Copper heater pipe
Just putting my engine back together, is the copper heater pipe in the correct place? This would mean that to replace the thermostat I would have to remove the pipe which involves taking off 2 head nuts! It does line up with the bottom hose but just does not look correct.

Re: Distributor drive 180 out
To rape things up.
Thank you for all your replys. I left the drive 180 out and just rearranged the leads. All seems to work fine. So it does not matter if the drive is 180 out just set TDC to no 1 firing, see where the rotor arm is pointing and that is no 1 lead.

Distributor drive 180 out
I have just rebuilt my Engine, and I think I may have the Distributor drive 180 out.. Does this matter? Can I still set the timing? When no1 cylinder in at TDC on compression the rotor arm points down,(Between7 and 8 on a clock face) so as long as the lead from there goes to No1 plug it should run??

Re: Engine number
Thank you, that makes sence. Being a late car (1971) and fitted with a Dynamo Ray Newell may be correct. It did seem strange that a van engine would be fitted and I also had a van engine sitting in the garage for over 20 years. Not sure what a closed circuit breather is but both engines have the big...
