I have fitted a later switch to my sons' car as he has big feet and the current fashion is to wear huge boots too, so using the dip switch was hard to do. It was in my garage, which means it was either an mg one or more probably a Triumph Stag one. it has a horn push, indicators and dip/main/flash. ...

I had the same problem a few months ago on one of my cars. The problem is that when the white end pops out you also loose the spring as well (I did anyway) and that stops the handbrake ratchet from working. You need the spring to act on the back of the white end to pull the pawl into the ratchet, so...

As a test for worn valve guides then some form of engine braking ( as Ray said) is a good indication. I always test for it by driving down a long hill with the engine just holding the car to a reasonable speed without touching the throttle, (in a lower gear). Then when you get to the bottom, give th...

I needed to take the front panel out as I didn't use a hoist, only a trolly jack and a small plank of wood. I am also pleased to say , now that the engine has been running a while that it is one of the smoothest running engines I have ever had in a Morris. It originally came out of a late van, not t...

quite close, Naphill. Yes it was good to get all that done so quickly, and unusual, just had to let somebody know as it dosen't happen too often.

Quick fit fitter

One of out 'fleet' developed a rattle a few weeks ago, it has now started to get louder. So, in a mad moment I decided to swap the engine for a good one I have lying around. It went brilliantly, total of just under three hours and she was done. Everything went well, the hockey sticks came off a drea...

Same thing happened to my daughter, must be a girl thing, it turned out to be the cable wasn't fully tightened into the gearbox, so the drive wasn't connected to the cable. I blame the fool that changed her clutch, that will be me then--oops

well I have just changed a gearbox this weekend for my daughter, her gearbox was getting very noisy and I had a spare few hours. I remember reading recently somewhere on this board that fitting a gearbox was much easier without the stearing rack in place (it may well have been Ray with his left hand...

Just to drag the subject back...a little. A friend has just bought a MK1 cortina with what looked like an original battery still fitted. It's the type with the big external connectors joining the cells on top. He tells me that the previous owner bought it new a few months ago from a firm called Linc...

As I had a change of plans last night which left me with an hour to spare and so I have now checked out the odd switch on the gearbox remote. It only works when the gear box is in neutral and is not a reverse switch at all. It is also not possible to add this to a Morris box without cutting a detent...

no: sorry chaps, the other right hand side. if you look at the top of that blue bag which is to the right of the picture, in line with that on the right hand side of the remote, you can just see the side of a thin hex head bolt. That has been replaced with a switch on my remote.

Brilliant pics, Matt. the last picture is exactly what I have on my sprite. a plunger type switch is screwed in there and when you engage reverse a rod is moved upwards to 'make the switch. However the MG remote has this feature and a mystery switch, which I will attempt to discover more about after...

thank you for that Onne, I have done my sums now and worked out that all other things being equal the change from midget rolling radius to Morris rolling radius results in about a 6% decrease in indicated speed. I will be going faster than the speedo reads. Talking of speedo's did you have a problem...

sorry Matt, I don't understand that. If you sit in the drivers seat of my Sprite the reverse switch is screwed in to a tapped hole parallel with the centreline of the car just to the right of the gearstick, near the top of the housing. My Morris gearbox remotes do not have this tapped hole. The midg...

Speedo swap

On one of my cars the speedo has just started jumping and sticking. I have checked the cable which is fine. Now I do have a spare speedo but, and this is the question, it is from a van. Am I right in assuming that this will read wrong if I fit it to the car due to a van having a lower rear axle rati...

thank you Matt, I do however have a standard 1275 gearbox on my Sprite, several standard Morris gearboxes and this odd ball remote from a midget. I will be investigating this further as, if it works, this would be a quick and easy modification to fit a reverse light switch to a standard Morris box. ...

Gearbox reverse switch

I am planning on puting a reversing light onto my son's car, something I have already done for my daughter's car. With the first one I fabricated a bracket and mounted a microswitch next to the gearlever. This time I decided to get a remote housing from a midget and use its inbuilt switch. I was off...

you could always do what I did and fit an uleaded metro head. Mine was a 1275, so I did a bit of work but the 1000 mini of metro from 1988 or so onwards were unleaded.
