Speedo not working, what are usual causes?

Post by 246gts »

Daughter was driving when it failed and didnt notice if needle wavered about before it died!
Not had much time to check yet but have taken speedo out and cable is still connected.
Cable seems to have a square end at that end (not rounded off) doesnt seem broken at that end anyway
Cant get to other end till later in week but what are the "usual" causes?

I would disconnect the cable from the speedo and then attempt to find out if the cable turns when the back wheels are going round. This involves running the engine with the gearbox in something other than neutral.

Either do it with the car stationary and one back wheel jacked up off the ground or with the car going along and an assistant in the passenger seat holding the speedo.

Take care not to let any live connections make contact with the bodywork.

Does the mileage counter still work? One one Minor I've driven you have to bang the top of the dash occassionally as the needle gets stuck at zero (once in a blue moon).

Same thing happened to my daughter, must be a girl thing, it turned out to be the cable wasn't fully tightened into the gearbox, so the drive wasn't connected to the cable. I blame the fool that changed her clutch, that will be me then--oops
