gearbox rear seal trouble

Post by geert »

Hi from Holland!

Ma=ybe you can give me some advice on how to put the new oil seal on. Taking the propshaft off and pulling the old seal didn't give too much trouble but there's no way I can get the new one on. tried all different kinds of methods. It just keeps getting stuck because I can't get it aligned in the correct way. I noticed a difference between the old and teh new one. the new one has a straight edge whereas the old one has a - don't know the correct English words- tapered / edge - i mean it is very thin at the outer rim and then gradually thickens to the thicker metal. Tha t makes it much easier to align and tap on. The new one doesn't have that. In the process i slightly damaged the outside of the new one. Not the inside. Could I still use this one you think?

Any advice?

Thanks,

Geert

If you look further down this page you will find an old posting on this subject, I have just replaced mine in a 69 traveler and used a large socket that had a similar external size as the seal and used that with a rubber hamer to slowly drift it on. :) 8)
