Does anyone want to recommend a good gas supplier for MIG welding supplies?

I'm looking to rent a bottle somewhere locally so I can practice my welding (and to also see if I'm good enough before things get much further with Hebe!)

Thanks

Nikki

Try Airproducts, or BOC - should be advertised locally, or check out their websites.

BOC - they're pretty close to you, hiding away near to where the local branch meets

Yep, I'd recommend BOC too, but these days I use the little 600g bottles from Machine Mart.

I'd only recommend BOC if you're going to do a LOT of welding over a short period.
A years rental (~£60) and just one refill (~£50) will buy a huge amount of disposable bottles!
Months of work doing a pretty poor car (sills, chassis leg, crossmember floor etc.. can be done with just one BOC bottle)
Therefore if the work is going to take many years it will be cheaper to buy a half decent Minor intead of renting a BOC bottle.

See if anyone will flog you a bottle.

Then if you're happy with CO2 a local fire extinguisher place or friendly pub might help out with cheap refills :)

I got a CO2 bottle from local tip. You know they have those gages for old Calor bottles and the like. Just make sure the test date on the top is valid then your local brewery supply firm will fill it for you. Think it cost me about £10 last time.

I have heard that co2 from pub supplies have nasty impurities added.
I get mine from a local Fire Extinguisher Supplier.. £12 for a re-fill
no rental & delivered to my door free..

Practical Classics has an article on MIG welding this month and it advises you not to use pub gas. Doesn't give a reason though.

So long as you can find someone who'll refill it, then I reckon 20 quid plus P&P isn't a bad deal. Looks a bit like a repainted fire extinguisher to me though!

I've got a bottle I paid 50 quid for, exchange type refills are about 3 quid a kilo (with the choice of 3 or 5kg bottles). The 50 quid was pricey, but less than a years BOC rental, and the gas is about the same price. Just plain CO2 though, no choice of lovely argoshield :(

CO2 is perfectly fine. It's all I use.
