Hi Steve, I've had fun with this one, basically the cap is pushed on' but there is a groove machined in the aluminium 'tail' which is hidden by the cap, at this point the cap is peaned over into this groove slightly which makes removal quite difficult, moreso if the gearbox is in situ. I managed to methodically tap it off, but slightly damaged the casting, on reflection an angle grinder used with care to cut around the cap about 1/8 '' from the front might have been a better option. Good luck.

The gearbox rear seal can be a sod to get off!! In the end I used a grinder, hacksaw and chisel to get the old one off (be careful not to damage the gearbox metal just underneath) and as you say the new one pushes on (with a few taps from rubber mallet). Did the trick though, my 4-door now has no oil slick underneath!

Hey, John, don't tell Nikki you did not use the correct tool for the job and ended up using a grinder, tut, tut !!

I couln't find the place to fit my Whitworth spanners! ;) There are no nuts and bolts there, so the only choice is to drift or cut the old seal off.
anyway, what is the correct tool for this job?

A hacksaw, a big screwdriver and a medium hammer...
I used an angle grinder last time, and it just doesn't have the finesse
For fitting the new one: a medium hammer and the correct size socket.
