ello friends , anything i need to do before i sart my new motor up? fill the oil filter , the engine shop said , dont run it untill the oil light goes out, someone might know what he means ,cos i dont , he said if it dont ,remove oil light switch and squirt oil down there, does he mean crank it over by hand at first,steve

when the oil filter housing is empty, the engine runs without oil for a good 30 seconds. To avoid that you can remove the oil filter housing and fill it up. This makes a major difference.
If it was me then I'd crank it over without the plugs until the oil light goes out.

I cranked mine over on starter with the ignition off, using the button under the starter solenoid. I let it run for about a minute like this.

Fill the oil filter, pull the plugs, spin the engine on the handle a little before spinning it on the key. When the pressure light goes out then pop the plugs back in, spin on the key till it goes out again then pull the choke out (if it isn't already trying to fire - If it is trying to run then just pull the choke and start it up).

Might also be worth dripping a little oil into the cylinders to provide some cylinder wall lubrication - Not too much or you'll get lock/ bent rods when you put the plugs back in! Even if it doesn't really help to do that, you do get a lovely amount of neighbour startling smoke on startup

Yup, that's what I was told by an engine reconditioning place after they did some work for me. That's what I've always done and never had any problems this way.

As for getting the engine to fire........
