You couldn't stick a voltage regulator somewhere behind the dash? I don't actually know how they look to be honest, neither of my cars has one there.

STEVE.. the original wires for your car would have been: one Green wire from
the fuse to one contact on the fuel gauge, one green wire from the same gauge contact to a bullet connector which feeds the oil pressure warning light and the heater rheostat(which I am sending down to you) and another green wire from the same gauge contact to the windscreen wipers. In other words
there will be three green wires on one terminal on the fuel gauge, the other
terminal will have a green/black lead coming from the tank sender unit.
If you do fit a voltage stabiliser then the three green wires go to that(terminal
marked'B') and the other terminal (marked 'I') goes to one side of the fuel
gauge replacing the original three green wires. If you are changing engine
and diff ratios then a matching speedo complete with voltage stabiliser would
be easier BUT if you change to a `1098 speedo then you MUST fit a 1098
type tank sender unit.

STEVE, I didn't change the speedo cable when I swopped from a 948 speedo
to a 1098 type but am not sure about your earlier type so suggest you ask
one of the Minor specialists if the cables are the same.

As far as I remember (vaguely ) I managed to use the same speedo cable when changing from an early SII speedo to a Minor1000 speedo - so they can't be too different!
