Help! Nut on front of 1098cc cam causing trouble!

Does anyone know the size of the nut on the front of the camshaft of the 1098cc engine?

I’ve been having trouble removing the nut. It just won’t budge, which is really annoying as I’m in the middle of replacing my timing chain!

I knocked back the lock washer on the nut and, as I didn’t have a socket big enough to fit the nut, I initially tried using a large adjustable spanner. No luck, as it just kept slipping off the nut whenever I knocked the end of the spanner with a hammer to try and free off the nut.

I tried a 1 1/8” spanner, which was too small. A 1 3/8” was a better fit, but still too loose to stop it slipping off. Not even a pair of mole grips was good enough.

Really, a socket in exactly the right size would probably do the trick, but I’ve looked through three different Morris 1000 workshop manuals written by three different sources and none mention the size of the nut.

The nut is 33mm across its face, but it’s probably an imperial size.

Am I right in thinking that the nut is a normal type thread and not a reverse type thread?

Has anyone had this problem? It’s really driving me mad! How can such a simple thing like undoing a nut cause so much frustration? Aaaagh!

Can anyone offer any advice (or the size of the nut)?

Hi, I have just completedf this task, engine now back in the car, and it WORKS!!! The size of socket you need is 1 5/16" AF. Draper make them, as do many other manufacturers I'm sure. I got mine from one of my local Morris parts suppliers, Leadbetters of Lancashire. This socket is also necessary for if you ever need to remove the steering wheel. If you can fine a deep socket of that size, it'll also fit the starter dog on the front of the crankshaft. I had fun removing that, but found a combination spanner to suit on ebay. Good luck!

Aye it's 1" 5/16 - same size as Mini drive shaft nut! In the past I have just used a chisel - but a socket is far better. To stop it turning - put an extension bar through the hole in the sprocket and through a matching hole in the block.
