I know!

Got oil leaking from oil filter from the bottom of the fixing bolt, having just changed the filter guess I have put the thing back together in the wrong order, was tired at the time but am a simple lad.

Anyone advise me of the correct order of spring and washers.

Many Thanks

what type of morris do you have? On the early oil filter there are three washers (in descending order) a fibre washer, special spring washer and then a plain washer and obviously the nut itself.

on the morris 1000 'full flow' filter, there is just one washer i think, but the most likely cause of oil loss is the rubber o-ring at the top of the element holder. Make sure there isn't an o-ring already in place using a screwdriver and running it around the edge of the filter holder. push the new o-ring into place on the filter holder and make sure it is in place as you screw the element holder into place. The holder should be torqued up to about 16 lb/in i believe. To check there aren't any leaks bring the engine up to a fast idle while looking to see if any oil drops from the filter. Any oil leaking may appear to drop from the bottom of the filter but is likely to be dribbling out from o-ring.

the bolt may simply need tightening unless there is something wrong with the filter, if you have peristent problems you may want to switch to a screw on type element. But thats about all my knowledge on the subject, sorry i couldnt be of help.

There should be a rubber o ring on the bolt that goes through the middle (at least there has been on the 2 minors i have changed the oil filters on)

Leaks from the housing to manifold seal are quite common and if it runs down the back it can look like a leak from the bolt, so this needs to be carefully checked.

I'd also expect it relates to the rubber o-ring under the bolt head (I think there are a variety of designs for that seal but it may be because my cars had been messed with before)
Another (remote) possibility is that th bolt has been overtightened at some point and deformed the aluminium housing so that it doesn't seal on the o-ring.

(I think there are a variety of designs for that seal
we have two 1970 2 doors in my household and they are different designs.

The last time I got a cartridge filter I fitted the rubber sealing ring supplied with it only to find the thing leaked. Hidden in the discarded box however was an alternative ring of a slightly different size. Swappig them over cured the leak.

They usually come with a big and skinny o-ring, i find the trick is to use the skinny one and push it into the filter housing before placing the element holer back on but making sure the o-ring stays in place, also if you use a torque wrench you know the filter is tight enough/not too tight

Spot of grease on the O ring helps to hold it in place.

hadn't thought of that! Ill do that next time, should save me from keep checking its in place.

I dont replace the o ring if it doesn't leak (which it hasn't so far....)

I must say that I have a large collection of these O rings in my garage as I
never changed one during many years of filter swops! I have fitted the throw-away cannister type now which makes life much simpler BUT, have
found that the Joint between the crankcase and the new filter housing is prone
to leakage if not perfectly mated.

leak is definately from the bolt & not the top of element holder
The O ring at fault is the small one that goes on the bottom of the canister, not the large one at the top.

If you look under the engine section and then oil filter you will find nice diagrams of the 3 types.
