Ignition timing 948cc

The difficulty in owning several different workshop manuals is that they sometimes all say different things. eg Timing setting.

My engine is a stock 948cc High compression unit running on standard (91 Octane) unleaded fuel (with upper cyl lube). It does have a 1-1/2 carb off a Moke, but it's on the standard manifold.

3, 5 or 7 degrees BTDC?

7 seems to work well, but any confirmation would be gratefully recieved.

[Edit] - earlier threads suggest 5 degrees is correct. Should have searched first! Tsk Tsk :D

The A-series is not that fussy really. I would have said around 5. but if it's happy with 7 then 7 it is! :D

5 to 7 is a good starting point. Back it off if you get pinking.
Much less than 4 and you will be loosing a bit of power.

Advance till it pinks under load in top gear - then back it off slightly.
