Well I hope we have got the heating/ engine temperature and mayonnaise production sorted in one hit over the holidays.
I ordered up a hotter thermostat and when I came to fit it I found out that the previous owner had been running the car without a thermostat, probably fine for summer "days out" but not ideal in mid winter for daily use.
Before playing with the heating system I watched the excellent video produced by Kate detailing her exploits with a heater unit and found that this gave me both the encouragement to get on with cleaning out the unit but also the back up that "it is normal practice" to excuse the state of our kitchen sink!
So after cleaning and refitting everything with the correct ducting scavanged from a donor unit it was off for the trial run.
After a few minutes the heater was blowing positive heat to both feet and screen and suprise suprise my daughter Julia had to open the window as it was too hot!!!
Lets keep fingers crossed we dont end up overheating.

PS how do I get this signature smaller??????????

You'll just have to shrink it in your imaging programme, upload it to whereever you've stored the big version and then link to the smaller one. Congrats with the thermo, BTW, and YAY! Kate for the video :D

Hee! Glad to be of service!

I'm all wow'd by that.

Incidentally, *if* I ever manage to get a camera sorted, would people like some more sort of mechanically stuff ones? And what would people want? [begin thread hijack]

I think if you ever get the time it would be good to show operations which are not too complicated which could be attempted by a keen amateur, such as
changing a head gasket
fitting a thermostat
adjusting a carb
adjusting the brakes
greasing
oil change
trunnion bushes
adjusting tappets
setting points
in fact most of the "regular" topics that crop up on this forum
the more complicated items are best left to the more competent owners and to be fair to you I wouldnt want you to have the responsibility for any mistakes.

If the car had no thermostat then the mayo is not surprising. Be sure to change the oil immediately after a good hard run - to strip out as much of the muck as possible.
