Amount of paint needed

Post by Nigel2 »

Assuming a complete respray, what quantity of paint and primer/filler will roughly be needed to do the complete exterior of a saloon. I don't want to order too much but as the final colour will have to be mixed but I would be mad if I was 1/2 litre short!! Will be dome in 2k. Thanks - (apologies if this has come up before but I cannot find a thread thay gives any indication).

If you have removed all panels, have every part down to its component form and you are spraying the inside and out of each panel, then I would suggest 2L of etch primer , 4 liters of high build primer and 4-5 liters of top coat.Your paint supplier will sort the relevant amounts of thinners and activator. If you are going for a top quality finish, or just a quick route to achieving your body prep finish, then use Re-face this is a polyester paint, which is designed to fill any air holes in filler or slight imperfections in the panel surface, this we normally dry flat, having applied around 4-5 coats. Use 240 production paper and a guide coat to achieve a true flat surface. After this apply your high build primer normally we apply 4-5 coats, guide coat again then wet flat down with 800 before applying 4-5 coats of top coat. This final paint is flat down wet with 1500 then 2000 and then a final wet D/A with 3000 discs, the whole lot is then machine cut and polished to a flat mirror finish.
If you use the Re-face do not use etch primer underneath.
Hope this helps. :D
