Smoking

Leave the car idling for a minute or two, there is a fair amount of smoke (oil) from her when you pull off. Virtually no smoke on over-run (down hill and accelerating at bottom, there are lots of those round here!), compression OK on all cylinders. What do you reckon, worn bores or valve guides. Car goes like a train, standard 948 engine.

Sounds like valve guides but you need to do a compression test 1st and then put a spot of oil down each bore and do it again if it makes no difference its definatly the guides if it makes a difference the rings are worn but the guides can still be worn as well.

Sounds like piston rings to me.

You could try loosening off the rings by injecting some diesel into each bore - crank it over by hand - and leave to soak for 24 hours - then repeat! But yes - sounds like stuck rings, and there really is only one proper cure - pull the pistons out and re-ring them !
