Temperature probe for temp. gauge

Hello, some of you may have seen my morris listed for sale recently, but due to generous donation from a family member I can keep it! yay!

Im fitting a temperature gauge, a smiths electrical type, and I have the temperature probe from an old rover V8 manifold that came with some spare carbs. It has the correct thread and seals well in the morris minor cylinder head, but will it give sensible readings seeing as it is from a V8?

I don't think the amount of cylinders would matter much, I'd say try it! They are both 12V cars, so it should be all right, but do take care, is your car +ve or -ve earth?

hadnt thought about that... Im negative earth.. probably would rover v8 be negative too??

Yes, I did the conversion myself, I didnt know any minors left the factory negative earth.. anyway Ill rig up the gauge when It arrives and see if it gives a sensible reading.

good point. but there must be more people out there who know more about these things. I have one in the car, and I can't remeber quoting +ve or -ve earth

If the car's neg earth, and the guage is neg earth (I can 't remember if both terminals are insulated from the body or not), then it doesn't matter what the sender came out of! All it does is give more resistance when cold, and less when warm, it doesn't care which way the power is flowing through it :)

ah.. so its a thermisistor.. I see now. Ill just make sure there isnt a current surge when first connecting the battery after installing the gauge.

Emailed ESM spares about it and they say does not matter negative or positive earth, but has to be wired through voltage stabilizer, if you car is earlier than '63 then apparently you dont have the voltage stabilizer but they are only £5 from ESM...
