Rear cab panel for my trusty pickup

Post by my_truck_is_rosie_morris »

I'm in the process of restoring a gorgeous little '68 pickup. I've been REALLY lucky - the chassis and cab shell are in surprisingly good nick! The main rear cab panel, although workable, is extremely dented and wavy and the truck would really benefit from a replacement.

I used to see this panel available in steel and fibreglass up until recently. I have since been told that suppliers no-longer stock these. Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

To be honest, I have no preference as to steel OR fibreglass (or even second-hand), just as long as it is in good nick and won't require much beating and working. My current panel has been squashed and re-welded at some point in it's life and I don't want to use much in the way of filler.

If anyone could help me to get hold of this panel, it would be VERY appreciated. Although this is a budget rebuild, I want to make sure this little truck looks good when finished.

Thanks, Sim [/b]

Charles Ware's still lists 'glass ones in the catalogue, but they don't appear in the price list (?). Worth a call? 01225 447659 - good luck - and don't throw away the steel one - please :D

Hi. Thanks for the replies (so soon!!). I used to live in Bath and Charles Ware's was just around the corner from me, so was my first port of call. Unfortunately, they no longer sell them.

Also, I have just re-checked the East sussex minors site and they don't seem to list them. Having said that, I will still ask them.

Thanks again.

One of mine's 'glass, but it doesn't have a makers name on it, sadly. 'Jonathan', who runs JLH minors will probably know if there is anybody still making them, I expect he'll be on here later.

I'm afraid that they are no longer produced. I was going to purchase the mould from the guy in Leeds who did Mighty Minor's glass parts. I have listed this part on my to do list so if there were enough interest I may bring the production forward. If anyone has a v.good back I could borrow to make a mould, let me know. 8)

Told you he'd be on :D I don't think any of my steel ones are good enough - but if you want to restore one...

EDIT Thinking about that, I do have one that doesn't need THAT much work. If it's any use at any time, shout :D

Okay BG, might take you up on your offer in the new year. I should think that the prep work would run to about £500, plus a mould at £250, which would really mean that the cab back would need to achieve a retail price around the £100 mark, possibly less if the original cab back doesn't require too much work. 8)

I'll take some pics sometime soon. It's the usual bottom edge rusty stuff, but it's all there, which is a blessing. I'll check the one on the blue truck too, 'cos that has to come off soon :D

EDIT The first one's not on a vehicle, BTW, and neither is another one with no bottom edge at all :D
