Can anyone tell me what this is for?

Thats the oil breather on late 60's cars.

The pipe at the side goes to the oil breather on the tappet chest cover via a rubber hose and the pipe at tyhe bottom feeds into the inlet manifold.

My 69 Traveller has this, but my 71 saloon not.

Amazingly, the membrane inside (which is the bit that goes and needs to be replaced- to avoid weakening the mixture) is still available.

Yes - crank case ventilation system. No idea why it has a valve - I just run the pipe straight into the side of the carb - no fumes and no smells.
