mystery wire

Post by 246gts »

I have a green with thin red stripe wire"hanging about" in the engine compartment.
This wire comes out of the loom near front bulkhead, has a black plastic sleeve wire round it and an insulated female spade connector. It ends up on floor of engine compartment below the distributor.
Wiring diagram show only green / red as LH flashers front and rear but both of these (and all other lights) work without this wire being connected. Any ideas?

could it be for the the 'oil-filter-blocked' sensor?
or maybe the oil pressue sensor?
From memory these have wires 'green + something' on the later cars.

Oil ones are both green/ yellow from memory. Green/ red certainly sounds like indicator, could it be the wire failed and someone's run another one to the lights, leaving this one hanging around?

There's definitely a greed/red tracer going to the area of the headlights - I just broke it while pulling an engine out :(

mystery wire

Another possibility is that your car originally had the relay used on the 948cc
cars which was mounted in the engine bay? If so this had a green/red wire
which mated with a green/blue lead to terminal 4. If your car has been mod-
ified to the later type flasher unit then it would have been redundant? In other
words what year is your car?

Car is 1968 saloon but it has a "new" wiring loom which may well accommodate various options.

Do you have wires going to the oil pressure switch, and the oil filter blocked connections ?

wire

Post by Willie »

246GTS....In that case I think the wire in question was included in case your
model was using the earlier 948 type relay. (the oil filter warning light,if fitted
would be a Green/yellow lead, and also green/yellow on the oil pressure switch).

I have come to the conclusion that the wire must be something to do with the oil filter / oil pressure switch. It ends up in that area and no other obvious use and everything else is working fine (today!).
Thanks for your help

On both of my late cars (69 Traveller and 71 saloon) there is also a wire hanging around by the distributor that appears to have no function!!!

Oil filter light blocked is a possibillity as both cars also have the light on the speedo.

I might connect the wire to earth amd see if the extra orange light comes on!
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

wire

CHICKEN....as I said above, if the wire was for the oil filter warning light
it should be Green with a Yellow trace.

I've got a the same wire in my 71 traveller. I couldn't bring myself to cut it off - so just taped it up out of sight. A word of warning mine is a live (-ve) switched by the ignition. so don't short it out.

That wire will read live when not under load as until it is earthed (usually by the switch) it will be showing the 12v from 'live' through the bulb and down the wire. If you earth it it will cause the bulb to illuminate.
