Overheating coil

My 68, 1098 saloon spluttered and died at the weekend. On lifting the bonnet I could smell that something was "burnt" this turned out to be the Ignition coil which was hot enough to blister my fingers. I tried a replacement coil which also started to overheat after a few minutes. I have checked/replaced the points, condenser etc and there is 12V at the coil. I have fitted an alternator recently and swapped the polarity to NEG earth also swapping the low tension wires on the coil at the same time.
I know I'm missing something but can't think what. Any ideas would be welcome.

Is the coil for a ballast or non-ballast system.

The Ballast coils are designed to work on 9v whereas the non-ballast systems are designed for 12v.
