electronic ignition

Hello folks

I am looking for a electronic ignition, rather than the old points, since the latter isn't supplied to me in good quality, so keep failing.

But there are
3 options...

Oh btw I have ruined my radiator. Just to let you know, I pierced my starter handle through the bottom tank, right next to the reinforcement plate
Cor am I lucky

If this is to go on an A series, then I might have one of those 65DM (or whatever the number is) Metro ones up for sale. RussLVC has fitted one, I'm not sure what he did other than change the drive on the bottom end.

Was thinking about keeping it for myself, but to be honest I'm quite happy using points and I'm still quite some way off needing one for a Minor (due to lack of Minor to call my own).

So that makes 4 options :)

Bummer about the rad, how on earth did you manage that?

I really don't know, it put the starter handle in through the hole, and missed the starter dog, so I pulled it out, turned it, and ruined my rad.

I don't really want to change too much if it isn't absolutely necessary.

If you can find a Metro with the electronic setup (most 1275s after 1985ish I think) then as far as I know all you have to do is swap advance weights (not necessary, but means you keep the original mech advance) and the drive on the bottom of the dizzy (swap it for the one off your old one). Then a small bit of wiring, get the right coil, and you're away :)

At least, I think that's how easy it is going by what was said on another thread a while ago. Means you'll have a small box on the side of the dizzy, and of course the dizzy itself will look slightly different, but there's no wires all over the place or control boxes to try and hide.

I've yet to use a starting handle with the bonnet down, so far I've been careful to peek into the engine bay as I line it up till I get used to it. But it must still be rather unlucky to put it through the rad :(

I can never seem to find the right place without opening the bonnet - I know, I tried again yesterday :D

If I buy one off the shelf from ESM, will it fit without those alterations?

If you buy a simple optical or magnetic (Hall effect) kit then you're replacing one trigger type (points) with another, so no messing around with weights, drives, etc :)

So it's a bit more pricey than a s/h Metro dizzy, but a lot simpler (and easier to find unless you live near a Metro graveyard?)!

Metro are really hard to come by these days in holland. I'll go for the optical or magnetic one then. do you know which one I should buy?

try the link up there /\

Well Hall effect (magnetronic) is what most (if not all?) companies used, and it's quite reliable. More importantly you'll have a 25d dizzy won't you? Can't see you having a 45 anyway. So that narrows it down a bit out of those 3 :)

I've got a bog standard 1098 in my series II out of a Van. what is the difference anyhow?

25d - Rounder cap, advance/ retard fine adjustment using a small wheel on the same side as the vacuum advance. 45d - Squarer shouldered cap, no fine adjustment.

There's also differences to the way the points fit, and probably in the guts of it somewhere, but the main thing is to get the right kit for what you've got. I'd be surprised if you had a 45, but it's not impossible I suppose :)

Onne, speak to Aldon Automotive. http://www.aldonauto.co.uk/ They supply electronic ignition kits (magnetic type) for the 1098 distributor. They do it in negative and positive earth too. Their units are particularly good because it can be changed back over to points in minutes at the side of the road (if need be). I have had one for about 11 years and only had one wire break which I re-joined and it's been fine ever since! :D

Just stick with points. At least when they go wrong - you can fix it easily. Check the points gap twice a year and they will last for yonks. Far far simpler than messing about changing the drive cog on 65D unit. Even then - I am not sure it will fit in properly - the clamp arrangement is surely completely different?

there are very nice sets available, which don't need distr. changes.
You seem to know a lot about these HDM113C, what kind of car do you have. I'd guess a Minor...

Agreed. But if you DO feel the need then:

Well, several people have made the same guess this evening, as is evident from some of the posts that have been made... :D

But then there is 40 years experience in those words. Go for points but don't use an additive....
