Hi guys

I was just thinking what a good invention the magneto was, a spark producer and distributer in one unit, does any one know why they stopped being used?

I am sure they had an perfectly good reason for that

yeah, but anyone know why?

Magneto? He went bad. Xavier had such a problem stopping him from attacking people too... :/

I wonder if cost was against the magneto? A dizzy and coil is quite a simple cheap setup, whereas I think a magneto is rather pricier to make.

Grins :)

That was incredible research - you know, some people get degrees for less :D

Sarcasm aside, I have seen people get degrees from less research!

*Sighs...*

Never got one of them, mate. Should've gone to university,I 'spect...

Nope, you made the right choice. University is for losers!

It might be something to do with how many cylinders you have. On a single cylinder, the magneto has a full revolution to build up the magnetic field before the points opoen the circuit, with two cylinders half. When you get to four cylinders I expect you need better magnets, more coils in the magneto, etc etc.

This is purely my guess, nothing more.

The truck in the pic and the 1916 fire engine both have mags (although the fire engine uses a coil to start) and they are both 4 cyl. Prehaps its to do with increasing compression ratios, and the need for a higher voltage to get the spark....

The 20's Austins ( the 12 certainly, probably others) used the magneto system, and they had four- and six-cylinder engines.

so I think we can discount the cylinder theory....

yeah, but I bet it would be a BA......
