No engine power intermittently-1098cc, standard fittings

This has started after a wet distributor following an engine wash (even though it was covered).
Wiped and dried the cap and the internals and all ran OK....untill you try and rev the engine.
It would struggle, splatter and eventually cut out, unless you release the throttle, in which case it would idle perfectly.
This happens hot or cold and does not seem to have any pattern -it may run OK for an entire journey and then be like this the next start or happen the next time you touch gas. (Last one was while pulling out into dual carriageway - luckily bu stop and lay-by were near :evil:..And then a tow home.)
Since then replaced:
HT leads, Dizzy cap, rotor arm, points, condensor, plugs, coil from working car, reamade all LT wiring.
Checked voltage and connection on iggy key etc - seems OK and constant, advance works according to the strobe as you attempt to revv the engine.
Re-buit the dizzy out of the car - just to check advance weights&springs are still there. Replaced wire links on the points backplate (post to outside terminal and a link the ground).
Fuel is certainly getting through - see it blowing in with filter removed.
Anyone seen this before? Are we talking new but dead HT parts - rotor arm/cap/leads? Would not be a first though.
Will be onto the carb this Sat - as I got almost nowt more to overhaul on the iggy side!
Any suggestions (even silly ones! :) ) will be welcome.

Cleaning out the carb certainly won't hurt.

You say the advance works when attempting to rev - actually it should turn off when you press the gas (did you set the timing at tickover using the strobe? If so, did you disconnect the vac advance first?)

Certainly sounds like you have checked it all. So 'must' be in the carb.

Yep, set with strobe, and with the vacuum disconnected. Runas great when it is going, fault just suddenly appears, hence assumption that it may well be electrical.
Should get all HT parts from ESM tomorrow and may even get a chance to strip the carb - just in case.
Let you know what it was if i ever find out! :wink:

This happens every now and again on our traveller. We think it's air locks in the fuel line and removing the locking filler cap fixes it! Why not try opening the fuel filler next time just for fun!

Could be the fuel thibg - but realistically - it's more likely to be a broken wire which is touching/not touching. Try running temporary alternative wires to the coil direct from battery - and from coil to dizzy - and see if that helps.

Well, got it trapped first thing on start up. Tried the extreme clean - block carb air entry while revving - and the damn thing cleared!!!!! :lol:
So carb it was all in all!
A bit of muck stuck in there. I tried the above before a good few times and it done nowt. Must have been not for lon enough?


So here we go - carb it was.

Quick obs - with fault present there was a small jet of fuel looking from the intake side (which I thought was OK at the time). When cleared it was HUGE in comarison.

Well done - rarely do SUs get problems with dirt in the jet - but in this case it seems to have done the trick.
