Apologies that this must have been discussed a few times before but where 'should' the rear axle filler hole be on a series II?

Needless to say Monty doesn't have one
If it is the diff that was changed they did a bad swap as this one makes a racket!

Which axle is it? Is it the 'banjo' type (similar to the 1098 one) or the square 'split' axle?

If it's the 'split' axle then the filler is on top as can be seen in the painted axle picture. You access it via a small metal cover plate under the rear seat.

RAY,,,,You will remember that it is possible to finish up with no
oil filler plug if the later diff carrier has been fitted to the earlier
axle!! If you are that unlucky you will have to drain it and inject
the correct amount through the breather hole!! Hope you have a
day to spare!

It's the later style axle - (like the 948?)
So it sounds like the filler should have been in the Diff
By the sound of it yesterday it needs another diff anyway! I'll get one with a filler hole, (or drill and tap it myself)!

Is that the noise I was hearing on monday then? The one which went away as soon as I said "Ray, Come and listen to this noise"?

No - that was the exhaust hanger which didn't have the clamp bolt in it.
