How often have you put on a new filter, only to find that thin seal has not stayed in the right place and is useless. Try this for a cure, wipe the outside of the oil filter holder with a dry cloth and with the new filter inside the cannister wrap a 1/2" wide piece of masking tape around the top of the cannister with a 1/16" overlap. Put the filter ring on the top of the cannister, inside the thin lip of masking tape and now screw the new filter into place. Just before finally tightening with a spanner or socket peel off the masking tape - then tighten. Works like a dream!

Sorry to be a pain :o but is there any chance of a diagram to explain how this works :-? as I normally try to stick the seal in place with some oil before I screw up the filter assembly, or has anyone else any imput

I use some oil on the new seal to hold it in place too. Then (holding one side in with a finger) I go round the seal pushing it fully home with a thin bladed screwdriver.
That works as long as you do it just before fitting the cannister. Any more than a few minutes and it tends to fall out.
