Steve , if the panel is good, do you really need to strip right back to bare metal?? This could actually encourage new rust to start, especially now the damp autumn weather has started.

ello mate ,the panel is 99% solid, but found some rust when i stripped underside ,so didnt want to take any chances, as it happens it had spread round to the other side under the paint, cheers mate

people do seem to disagree about this, some say to use etch primer after stripping and some say red oxide is better :-?

some use curust or similar i think

hope whatever you choose works for you SR :D

I personally use red oxide for non-visible areas and etch primer for the top bodywork.

curust is a rust treatment and ideally the rust should be chopped out and replaced with fresh metal...

ahh, but evem if you take it back to bare metal there will still be tiny rusty pits where you won't be get it all off.... when my sprite was at bare metal i KuRusted it all and sanded as much off as I possibly could (just leaving the converted rust bits in the pits) then etch primered it..... the engine bay was done abuot 3 months ago and it looks good.

The idea of etch primer is to bond chemically with the steel to prevent rust speading, the idea of red oxide is that the primer would react before the steel. I would do what Cam suggests and etch visible bit and red oxide the other stuff hope i helps

no rust really ,it was badly chipped paint whereits been thrown around the garage,so now ill have a nice smooth surface instead of dozens of chips to fill in
