Leafsprings, what to do?

Well, just a couple of questions.

what should be the distance between bumpstop and spring?

What should I have on my car, 5 or 7 leaves?
The latter because some LCV was used to donate its organs to my car

That's it actually....

I don't know about the bumpstops as mine has managed without ever since I bought it at least... so if someone does know could they also tell me how long the bumpstop is?

As for the springs I believe it should be 5 leaves for saloons and 7 leaves for travellers (and probably LCV's but I'm no expert).

ONNE....your early cars should have the seven leaf springs, these
give more control of the dreaded axle tramp but also give a much
harder ride. I changed my 7 leaf for 5 leaf for that reason.Depends
on your personal preference. From December 1958 the 7 leaf type
were replaced by 5 leaf on the saloons and convertibles. The
travellers retained the 7 leaf type.

STIG.....the difference between the top of the bump stop rubber
and the metal plate which is hits on full deflection is approx 1+ 1/2"
inches in the rest position.

Thats probably it Pete, I don't eat enough.... Must say I could do with some extra weight. 6ft3 and 10 stone. And no missus.

Is there any way of telling if my leaf springs are original?

It does not matter really as the new ones are pretty much exactly the same as the old ones.

6'3" and 10 stone!! :o Blimey, I'm 7 inches shorter and 2 stone heavier! As Pete says: Eat more pies!!

I expect it did come with leaf springs... It would occur to me to wonder if they were ever removed from the car as that would mean dissassembly might be easier in future, but I'd never wondered if they were changed as it's not like they're unique! Each to his own though ;-)

When I take my car for an MOT they fail it if a bumpstop is missing.

Perhaps as mine doesn't have any at all the tester doesn't realise it's even supposed to have them...
Generally he's pretty good and does find things I've missed (usually rust :( )

The rear chassis does have tell-tale wear marks where the springs have hit by the rear shackles after a trip to Ikea with my brother a few years ago. Oddly, that was shortly before one of the springs broke on a bumpy Welsh road...

Just in case I was wrong with these imperial measurements, how many kilos is 1 stone? Wasn't that 14lbs?

Hi Onne

Yes 1 stone is 14lbs & 1Kg = 2.2lbs so 1 stone is 6.36Kg.

11 stone then. I was less than 10 two years ago though, but I am enjoying my food.

Real pity I can't get any Cornish pasties here. I am addicted to them!

Hope this isn't a cunning plan to get pies sent from all over the country to avoid cooking!!
