I think this is the best place for the question. Could anybody give me a list of essential spares / tool kit I should carry with me, ie new fan belt, spare bulbs, spanner sizes etc. I know it is a simple and probably easily answered question, but I new to owning a morris again. I have a 1961 4 door saloon. Thanks in advance

Hi Kaj, welcome along. Yours is a question rather than a useful tip, so one of the moderators will probably move it. Anyway, you've started to answer your own question; and each person will have their own ideas. It also depends on how much you want to carry and the sort of driving you do. Why not come along to the Essex Branch meeting and disccuss with local owners. There's a 25th anniversary meeting on the 8th October. I would go to local meetings, but I'm not around alot of the weekends, so thought I would post a message. Realised after posting that it should have gone into 'other'. My use of the car is irregular, but can hit long journeys of over 100 / 200miles.

Moved to general discussion (& it may go back to 'tips' depending on the replies... ).

I would start with the items in a service kit (points, rotor arm, dizzy cap, filters, condensor, spark plugs). I always carry one around as they only cost about £15 and you use them after 3000 miles. A selection of bulbs and a number of 10 & 35 amp fuses, also a spare fan belt & coil for a long trip and some oil (many minors burn oil). You'll need to carry a number of tools including screwdrivers, adjustable spanners, pliars, wire crimpers & connectors plus a bit of spare wire.

To add to Chris's list, I would try and carry a spare fuel pump which is serviced and in good working order

I would also include a throttle return spring and possibly a clutch return spring only a £1 each.

Yes, a good point - the throttle return spring has a limited life and it's something most of us have experienced! Maybe also carry replacement windscreen and brake shoe springs....

mine broke just after i passed my test, quite a shock! however i managed to bend it so it would hold till i got home. Radiator hoses may be a good idea, espially in summer and dont forget the by pass hose between the block and cylinder head. Also..replacement windscreen !?

How about "RAC" membership. Mine came is very handy recently when the fuel pump packed up

i carry my rac card and i get breakdown with my classic insurance anyway.
so i carry them , and takes up less space .
ok i do carry spare bulbs and a bypass hose and thats it

AA Recovery - i upgraded my membership two days before buying a MM in Kent and driving it back to Manchester. Test drove it for 15 miles, handed over the dough and set off. fifteen miles later it breaks down. Called AA, they sent out a franchise bloke with a tow truck the size of Ibrox stadium to fix. After much revving and blasting of engine, declared 'dirt in fuel lines' and i drove to Manchester without further incident. Took car immediately to MM garage in Stretford, who examined it and declared that the front offside wheel was (makes small gap with two fingers) this close to falling off. Hey ho.

First time i took my car on the motorway something similar happened, just after the datford crossing it started running hot, about 100 to 110, so i just drove norwich at 45 -50 and made it after a few water top ups until my bipass hose exploded on the way back. I phoned the rac and they wouldnt send anyone out because i didnt know where i was, all i knew is i was on the a11! In the end they sent a truck to find me, took over 3 hours in the end.
