Hello

I am fitting one of these later type distributors to a Midget 1275 to go into my pick-up, has anyone used these? If so an problems or mods needed?

Is this the A+ dizzy - fixed with a single bolt and the fork thing ? What's the engine in the p-up?

Isn't the 65 the electronic one? If it is, then I've found there can be problems with the amplifier (sits on the side of the dizzy) and the magnetic ring affair inside. I've also been told you need to run the correct coil (12 volts, but might have an odd resistance? I don't honestly know, not very up on moderny stuff).

I've fitted a 45d to the pickup 1098 engine, but I don't know what year Mini it came off, so don't know if there's problems fitting A plus dizzies to A engines, although I'm fairly sure there isn't, from what I remember.

Cheers lads as far as I can see it is only the coil that you need to change, which is nice as I purchased this very cheaply (brand new) So it wil have electronic ignition for £10!!

Any other information always welcome

Nice :)

When I was trying to track down some running problems I had on a car with one of these, I found the 4 bladed ring thing inside had burned out on one of the connections, and the amplifier was dodgy. A K series Metro at the breakers donated both of these (I think, the ring might have been of a Maestro 1250 though), straight swap which might be worth bearing in mind if you want to stock up on spares (Lucas charge about 40 quid just to test the amplifier, and a new one is a shade more) :)

My Metro Haynes doesn't seem to give the wiring for these, but if you don't know it Google the IOW Triumph club, as I think they have a tech article on there about how to fit the 65 gubbins into a 45 as used on a lot of Triumphs, there could well be a diagram there somewhere :)

If your engine is not an A+ then it won't fit. hence the Triumph thread could be useful re fitting it into an older dizzy. But why bother ? Electronic ignition is fine when it's working but a real pest when it isn't. I just stick to points - easy to fix. Check them once a year whether they need it or not.

Found the right page :)

What's the problem with fitting an A plus dizzy to an A block? Can it be worked round by changing bits on the bottom end (of the dizzy), or is it simply a no go?

I can see the advantages of electronic being reduced bearing wear (so more accurate timing) and no burning out of points. And they do last a very long time before playing up. The only trouble is when they do start to play up it's usually in an engine not working kind of way... I was lucky, my car still started and drove reasonably well when my leccy bits failed, but replacing them made a big difference :)

As far as i can see the differences are quite important - it's a different drive shaft from the cam too. I have never bothered to try to mix and match - just have a box of A series dizzies and another box full of A+ !! My Minor engines are A and my Mini engines (all except one) are A+.

Change the ends is the simple answer!
