Rubber on front wing

Post by Olli »

To me can someone communicate whether with a Morris Minor year of construction 1959 between the front wing and the body a piping rubber is inserted?

Vernon is right its more of a small bump stop and I think its to stop vibration and noise between the two parts.

There should not be one on the front wing of a 1959 car (only on the rear wing)

There was no rubber between the front wing and the body regardless of year as far as I know. Only the rear.

The confusion lay in you using the word 'fender' which is American. Fender means wing but it also means bumper.

Tut tut - I'm fairly sure that the very ear;y cars have one, but not the Minor 1000

That could make sense as my '52 did not have any, but it's got (had) Minor 1000 wings fitted. Presumably they stopped using it in '56 then? Wonder why...

Hi Guys

How right you are Ray - off the top of my head I would have agreed with Cam but have just looked at my '53 & it has them also all the MM & S11 engine bay piccies in "Original Morris Minor" have them.

JANUARY 1955 'front wing piping discontinued on traveller and car'.
There IS a rubber moulding which fits on the leading inner edge of
the front wing and butts up against the front panel. (easy to forget
in the throes of fitting the wings). It must be to stop water ingress
into the engine compartment.

Of course. And easy to forget when fitting the front panel too! But Olli was on about the outer wing to inner wing piping strip. Wonder why they discontinued it though? :-?

I don't really know if they used sealer or just good paint. I Presumne that the wings were already removed on my cars before I got them so it is hard to know what is original.
If you want to seal this joint, you need to do it from above and below because the water will come from the wheel and also from the bonnet. If you just seal only one edge it might rust quicker due to the trapped water.
