Today’s ’little job’ UJs

Decided I’d replace the UJs, bit of vibration at 30-40mph, slight play at both joints, nothing too serious but a job to do.

Done UJs on MGs and Triumphs but never a minor, can’t be that difficult, can it?

Diff flange bolts off, no problem. Spline off gearbox, no problem. Maybe lost half a small cup of oil, no problem.

I’ve a 12t press so getting the cups in and out is dead easy, right? NO! The joints are tapered and the press pushes the shaft all over the place, PO mangled the holes with a mallet and the cups were destroyed pushing them through. Pushing the new ones in with the press was overkill - literally and destroyed a new UJ. Back to my old trusted G Cramp method and all back together and working fine

‘‘Twas a job in more need of doing than I thought, vibration now gone!

After removing my prop shaft to replace the transmission seal it occurred to me that it would be a good time to proactively change the universal joints as well. Unfortunately I didn’t have any on hand, didn’t want to wait for a delivery and wasn’t sure if any of the local parts stores had them. Im pretty sure they wouldn’t have a listing for a’59 Morris pickup. The old ones felt ok so the shaft went back in with the originals. Fingers crossed.
