FOR SALE – 1968 Morris Traveller – TMK 958F - Ruby
Due to ill health, I’ve not been able to work on Ruby for a few years now. Another problem has been the lack of a garage thus limiting the work time to fine weather! So, I’ve decided someone else needs to restore and look after her!
History:
First registered on the 1st of July 1968.
Original colour White – Current colour Red (!)
I have an assortment of paperwork, some going back to ’78. Included are the names of the last 4 owners – Tax discs – MOT reports – Insurance documents – Invoices for work and parts etc.
The last owner purchased Ruby on the 3rd of June 2008 and immediately drove her to Mallorca where she stayed for around 2 years. When back in the UK she lived on the south coast until 2nd gear failed.
Condition and work carried out:
Chassis and sills repaired.
Gearbox replaced with a used unit*. Needs oil! - Original box included with the sale.
* Purportedly from the Morris Minor that was used in the TV series Heartbeat!
Bottom of the near-side wing needs attention along with the bonnet crossmember (see photos)
Woodwork – needs replacing.
Needs a repaint.
Oil filter changed to screw-on type.
Prop shaft has had the bearings replaced and balanced.
Converted to –‘ve earth.
Alternator fitted – original dynamo included in the sale.
Replaced the brake vacuum assist unit with a slightly higher powered one.
Master cylinder replaced and a remote fluid reservoir fitted.
All four-wheel cylinders replaced. Front re-piped.
Replaced front wheel bearings.
Wheels have been painted just to stop any deterioration – they need full restoration!
Tyres need replacing – current tyres have been slimed to stop having to re pressurise every few weeks! Spare in the correct place.
Engine does run, however, would recommend pressure testing! Pressure test gauge included in the sale.
Ignition coil and HT leads replaced.
Original distributer refurbed by Distributer-Doctor and fitted with magnetic points. Spare distributer included with sale.
After fitting the refurbed distributer, the engine has not been re-timed! Strobe light included in the sale.
Carb replaced with a refurbed unit – original included in the sale.
Fuel pump converted to electronic and fuel filter fitted along with new flexible piping.
The part of Mr. Grumpy’s fuel heat shield around the carb. is fitted – the other part is included with the sale.
Water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, top and bottom hoses replaced.
Cabin heater flushed and heater valve replaced. Would recommend all heater pipes be checked/replaced.
Radiator pressure tested. Has been filled with antifreeze. More included with the sale.
Tappets ‘set’, rocker cover and side cover gaskets replaced.
Exhaust OK with mid supports replaced.
Clutch replaced by the last owner. Inspected when the gearbox was replaced – looked in good condition.
Clutch linkage replaced with Rose-Jointed Mechanical Linkage.
Steering column felt pads replaced – loosely refitted for moving her around!
Steering rack gaiters replaced – Needs oil!
Track rod ends replaced. Although I ‘counted’ the turns the tracking will need setting!
Note: track rod end nuts not tightened!
Engine mounting rubbers replaced.
The engine tie bar has been replaced with the alternative high strength unit.
Some work carried out on the offside steering e.g., top and bottom trunnions, seals and rubbers.
Note: At some point in the past the offside torsion bar has had the height adjustment plate removed and the height set and ‘welded’ in place using a washer (why would you do this??!!) Easily rectified, I believe. Height adjustment plate included with the sale. Not sure of the nearside condition!
During the work, some of the captive nuts have been found to be sized! These have been replaced with SS Rivet nuts.
Front and rear light fittings have been removed – all available.
She would, probably, benefit from a rewire, however, may not be needed?
Although I’ve not tried the window screen wipers, they will probably need to be refurbished!
The interior will also need a good overhaul! All the removed parts (removed for access) are included in the sale.
Several associated tools are included with the sale e.g., a pair of axil stands, some others listed above, some specialized and some of my working tools from the ‘70s when employed as a mechanic in Shipley, West Yorkshire.
Books included: The free MOSS parts and accessories book, the Morris Minor (series MM and II) Workshop Manual (revised edition (1962), Haynes Owners Workshop Manual for 1956 to 1971 Morris Minor 1000 (948cc & 1098cc) and The Morris Minor Catalogue (Bull?).
All the documentation from past and current owners that I have will be included.
I’ve probably missed a few things that have been replaced or worked-on and there may be some spares that I’ve purchased and forgotten about! I’ll collect them all to be included.
Please ask questions.
My original aim, of the work I’ve done, was to make her safe for the road – intending then to do more cosmetic work. Please bare this in mind!
The vehicle is SORNed, however, current ownership is with the last keeper – A relative (!) so will deal with the transfer when needed.
Although Ruby is on her four wheels, she is NOT drivable! So, you will need a trailer to collect.
Price, I’m asking, is £2200 or a reasonable and sensible offer – noting the amount of investment so far!
