Hi all,

A few years ago I registered an MOT exemption for my Morris. Since then I've had some MOTs done just to make sure that everything is all ok. I've just had loads of work done to the car so don't want to have to put it in for an unnecessary MOT this year - so my question is, do I need to re-register for the MOT exemption, since I've had MOTs done since the first exemption was registered? Is there any way of checking the exemption status? The gov.uk website isn't very helpful with this!

You don't register mot exemption if it over 40 years since 1st registration its exempt. You only have to register for free ved.

Yes, don't understand 'registering MOT exemption' - these old cars are just exempt. But 'free ved'? What's that?

Vehicle Excise Duty; road tax. Our cars are roads tax exempt but you still have to tax them every year even though the fee is £0.

Thanks all - I was getting confused because of the V112 form (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... om-mot.pdf), but it seems perhaps that only has to be submitted when a vehicle hits 40 years old and it's being registered for free VED for the first time?

Yes, the DVLA process was certainly not devised with the intention of gaining any Plain English Award.

Once the initial application for Historic Tax has been made at a Post Office, which requires the V112 as a declaration as to why the vehicle is not showing on their database as having an MOT, the subject never comes up at subsequent VED online renewals....
I remember wondering how it was all going to work when Basil's first renewal came up.... surprised to find that it was just the standard reminder form in the post to 'tax' at £0 rate.
Your car will simply show as no MOT on record . Its as though DVLA can't be bothered to have their database software updated....

And even if it were to fail a voluntary MOT, you don't need to re-submit it in order - as it were - to cancel out the Fail.
But you need to have fixed the fault of course. Otherwise your car is unroadworthy; an entirely separate offence from not being in possession of a MOT certificate less than 365 days old, for a car under 40 years old.
