Rear Lights

Hi I have an issue with my rear lights. The brake lights work fine but when you switch the lights on its the brake filament that lights and not the light filament. The rear lights have been changed previously by a previous owner but all the wiring is the correct colour right up to the connection at the new lights.
I have put a battery to the connections and the filaments do light independently. Any suggestions or does anyone know of a good auto electrician in the Loughborough/Leicester area.

What year of car?
Which light units are fitted?
It's undoubtedly an issue with earth connections.
Are both sides behaving identically?
What are the front sidelights doing when the brakes are applied?
I suspect that the rear Light Units are not correctly earthed and when you're operating the respective lights, they are earthing through the other circuit.

The earthing looks good at the rear but I will take it apart and clean the surfaces. Both rear lights behave the same not sure about front but will check them before I start. Thanks I will get back to you both.

Sorry didn't see the other questions, the car is a 1967 soft top and the lights were fitted before I got the car but look similar to the ones in the ESM catalogue.

Well as a '67, it would have had factory fit Indicators of this type, earlier than Oct '63 things are more complicated.

Check the earths; I'm unclear as to how the earth was connected on those lamps as originally fitted, perhaps someone with a later car can confirm it.
