Morning. a couple of questions on the large "washer" that sits at the bottom of the oil filter canister

1. is it supposed to be this odd rough shape? looks like someone has trimmed off bits
2. whilst cleaning it and pondering its rough shape I forgot which way up it goes, and neither of the manuals i have depict it?

It’s been badly made from another part, it’s wrong. From memory, as I now have a spin on filter, there is a rubber washer followed by a steel washer fitted to the long bolt, before assembly. Both washers are of normal size. Use a pin or similar for the O ring, and fit a new one.

I suspect that someone has mistakenly and without realising it thrown the original plate away with the filter element as it often attaches itself (and looks to be part of the filter) to the bottom of the filter especially if the clip holding it in place has been lost.
The plate shown is from another larger dia filter housing and has been trimmed badly to fit.
The Pt No: of the plate is either 17H1148 or 17H942 dependent upon whether the filter housing is Tecalemite or Purolator but I suspect that they are the same part and will fit either filter bowl.
The sequence of assembly top down is - spring clip, plate, felt or rubber washer, plain washer and then the spring.
To remove the rubber seal use a sharp pointed (old screw driver) to dig into the seal and hook it out.

As Phil says, it's the centre of the pressure plate very crudely cut down. Possibly they had lost the bottom collar.

Ah thanks for this I'll see about getting a new/correct one. So the 'top hat' pressing faces upwards into/against the filter cartridge.

Personally I would go for a spin on filter every time.
If you do - use one of the classic Mini type not a add on to the existing filter. Try and get one with the pipe attached otherwise you may have to re-profile the Minor pipe to fit which is not always easy. All strain must be removed from the pipe as it may lead to the breaking off of the filter head.

I used to use a pin or needle, with the pointy end bent over to about 20/30 degrees, to stab the rubber and pry it out.
A thin blade terminal screwdriver might work, again with the blade bent to about 20/30 degrees.

I have found that a dissection probe is great for this, but the pointed end of a compass would do the trick - just push the point in the rubber seal and lever it out.

Here's the part List view of the 2 filter assemblies, Tecalemit on the Left, Perolator on the Right.

Note the differences in their assembly and how they can be easily identified by the top housing.

Look online for pdf downloads of AKD3541(service parts) and AKD3542 (body parts).

OK on closer inspection these are all the bits that came off. A cut down spring, a bodged pressure plate, no seals, & no washers just this lot. So i might as well go spin on conversion for £25!

Just seen a few videos on the conversion now not so sure i want too. How do i tell if I have Tecalemit or a Perolator. Looks more like the assembly on the right of the GA sketch shown below. Now thinking i need to buy the various internal bits.

Cant seem to find anyone who can sell all the internal bits for a certain type?

I don't know about the Tecalemit ones but the Purolator filters are marked Purolator on the head attached to the engine.

As far as I can see, you have most of it in your picture.

You need a pressure plate, spring, pressure plate seal, pressure plate washer (goes above spring, then seal, then plate) and the o-ring that goes in the end piece that pushes on the bottom of the metal canister.

ESM have all of it as far as I can see. Search ESM with "oil filter" in the search box.
