I have come across these dimensions I made, from my long ago 1098 pickup restoration, they may be useful to anyone with such a vehicle.

I want to eventually add some sort of cover to my “new” ‘59 pickup. I retained the canvas camper top from my previous truck which I didn’t use because of the loss of rearward vision. The tie down buttons on the previous truck worked with the top but were located pretty far below the rail. Perhaps they were added by a previous owner rather than at factory location?

Just reading your post, I thought I’d check out a few pictures of pickups and found to my surprise that the hooks positioned lower down than my drawing indicated, seem to be quite common. I’m now curious to know what is right. It could be at the discretion of the owner, however I had no dilemma as to where to position my hoops, which indicates I was sure where they went. I need to know how the side panels left the factory drilled for hooks or not. I did buy a new offside panel for the restoration and I’m sure it was drilled but I have seen pictures of undrilled sides.

A previous owner panelled the interior of the box and repainted the exterior. If there were holes no evidence shows on the outside and the panelling covers up what might exist inside.
Did that cover have any bows or support to prevent water from pooling? Something that was available commercially in the UK? Looks very much like what I am looking for. After I get the brakes working and everything else running properly.

Lost the pictures for some reason, my computer is playing up but looks like my drawing at the top of the thread might need ignoring until more clarification.

The position of the brackets horizontally across the pick up side is correct and is very useful information, the depth position from the rail is the owners choice.

The details in the AKD 3575 bare out your configuration, though I guess there could be some variation in position

Wish I’d never started this now ! Chris has told me the base model had no hooks, the following pictures show the variations. Hope the files are not too big.

Haha...yes these types of posts gather pace quickly....the 66 pick up I'm restoring has no brackets/overhead wooden former for the tilt...

Well if you do add hooks Keith, seems you’ve got plenty of options re positioning! Good luck with the restoration.

Found this pic of the previous pickup. It didn’t have hooks but nylon or some kind of plastic spools held by a single screw. Looks like I was running the Sprite wheels at the time. I never really used the top except for storage. Rear visibility was horrible.
