Hi all, looks like the car I have bought has been run on just water for years, all the hoses are corroded and I’m replacing everything but come to replace the bypass hose the pipe coming out of the head that it goes onto has corroded away is this a big problem thanks

The pipe screws in and is replaceable, it may be difficult to remove and no doubt the head will need to come off to make things easier.

Thanks for that I didn’t know if it screwed in or not only trouble there is not enough sticking out to get something on to turn it, I better start taking the head off

Depending on how much good metal is there, welding a bar of some sort to what’s left may help you turn it out, penetrating oil will help. Other option use a drill small enough to not damage the thread. You might then be able to pick the remains from the thread.

Yes it is screwed in. It has an unusual thread as well so take care not to damage the thread.

With the head off of course, you can try heat from a blowtorch. Cycles of heating and cooling, penetrating oil.

Good luck getting the old one out. When you come to fit a new one, use one like this. It has a hexagon so that you can use a spanner to remove it in future. It is absolutely daft that they made these pipes without a hexagon. I too have destroyed one trying to get it out. Once that has happened the job becomes more and more difficult. Depending on what you have left, you could try to drift it round with a chisel or perhaps cut a slot so that you can use a socket type screwdriver bit that you can use with a ratchet handle or t-bar. Or maybe you can jam something down the pipe and again use a t-bar or ratchet handle to turn it.

you might also be able to drive a star drive into the remains.

I find that the easiest way to remove the corroded bypass stub is to drill out as much of the stub remains as possible and then gently grind away until you have a spiral thread spring which can be wound out of the head. If you can clean up with a 5/8" x 16tpi UNS tap before fitting your preferred adapter..
