New to ownership and have seen pictures of panels fitted in front of driver for instruments etc. I can see how to fill in the space but how to you refit the top centre bracket retaining screw ?

Maybe easier to advise if you post a picture or diagram of what you mean

Thanks Bill, I intend to fill in the trim with aluminium - trim is held in with 3 screws - 2 at bottom and one at top centre - if I fix the filler onto the back of the trim how do I access the top bracket? Hopefully picture is included! Also not sure why I am shown as not being a member?

Be much easier to remove the chrome surround an fit your infill to that lip from the outside, then the green piece can be fitted 1st

One question - how to secure the insert to the lip?

Is the lip big enough to use self tapping screws? If you want it removable.
If not maybe bond it to it with one of the available adhesive such as no nail etc

If I was doing it I'd make it so that the whole wooden panel could be withdrawn forwards for access to the gauges (for instance to change bulbs) and avoid any kind of drilling or modification of the metal glovebox surround. I can't quite describe it but I'd envision 4x screws with a metal "catch" behind that grips the rear of the metal glovebox surround. Possibly you could just use washers. Remember there's a huge hole underneath the glovebox you can put your hand through. Other people must have already done something similar. I'm sure I've seen pictures in the past.

You certainly can! I don't have any extra gauges. I think they're just something else to worry about. The only gauge I've ever seriously thought about fitting is a combined water temperature/oil pressure gauge but in the end I decided to keep things standard.

If it helps i made a infill panel from a peice of aluminium and held it in place by using counter sunk 4mm set screws which were held in place by a half nut on the back side of the panel with a half nut and filled on the front to hide them.
These were set to line up with the internal opening of the fixed trim on the drivers side then held in place by penny washers and nuts.

This is in response to a question in the wrong thread. How to fit the top centre screw for the surround?

The driver's side glove box projects beyond the opening. This is totally different to the passenger side where the glovebox goes inside the metal opening.

To fit the top centre screw, fit the bottom screws for the metal surround very loosely and then offer up the top section. From the lowest it goes glovebox liner, metal tab of surround, glovebox metal frame. The screw goes through the glovebox liner first, then the surround and finally into the metal fame of the opening. You will notice in the photo that there is a spire clip for the screw to screw into. If this is missing there's nothing for the screw to thread into. The rubber buffers can be replaced and are still available. A very short stubby crosshead screwdriver is an excellent tool for gloveboxes.
