Cord for Steering Wheel Cover

I don’t know why this is proving to be so difficult but I need to remove and refit Nellie’s steering wheel cover as although the cover is in good condition the cord holding it in place has all broken down.
For the life of me I cannot seem to find this type of thick cord anywhere… I want it to match as closely as possible. Have checked out my local shops and looked online but the waxed cord I find online is much much thinner than this, even the heavy duty stuff.
Any ideas where I could get something to match this? Bearing in mind this cord is probably well over 50 years old

I would be tempted to purchase a cheap steering wheel glove and ditch the glove but use the cord.

Or even parachute cord which can be obtained in various diameters.

What diameter is it?
Or perhaps easier to check the hole size, 3 or 4mm perhaps?

Waxed cord tends to be quite thin.
You'll possibly have to get 'natural' cord and then a small lump of beeswax to wax it yourself.

You've brought back memories of my basic electrical training.
Our training included making a small electrical loom, but instead of the fabric your Minor Loom is covered in, we had to lace it together with cotton cord, waxing it as we went....
