I am in the middle of installing a new loom in my 68 traveller all is going well but could someone tell me why there are two red wires with connectors on and two red wires with bullets on these are situated behind the glovebox area drivers side . The old loom has these connected together so I presume I just connect them together , but why were they left unconnected when the loom was manufactured

I am not sure just from memory. Have a look at the wiring diagrams in AKD530 making sure to look at the correct diagram for the age of your car.

You are in luck because at this very moment I am behind the driver's side glovebox. I will see if I can post some pictures.

Red is only used for Front/Rear Side Lights, Number Plate Lights and Panel Lights (in the Speedo).

All you can have there is the junction of these, the supply from the inline fuse in the engine bay and the 3 feeds out.

What I don't understand is the

two red wires with connectors on and two red wires with bullets

It should be 4 wires with bullets all into one 4-way connector.

Is it this junction you are referring to?

As shown on the wiring diagram, that's the only place where there should be 4 Red Wires together inside the Dash, the other 4 Reds connector is in the boot somewhere.
Hence why I don't understand the description of "2 with connectors on and 2 with bullets".

There should be only 4 wires into 1 'Connector'.

I had interpreted what the OP said as: two red wires terminate in bullet connectors (male) and the other two red wires also have male bullet connectors fitted but are already enclosed within bullet sleeves.

Maybe that wasn't what the OP meant?

Assuming you have the loom fitted in the car before spotting this issue.....
Logic is telling me this is simply a mistake by the manufacturer not just connecting them together....But professionalism tells me to double check it is as I(we) suspect before putting any power through it.

Do you have a 4 Way Connector, such as the one from the old loom?
Do you have a Multimeter so that you can double check it before jumping in and connecting all together?
It's simple enough to do, you don't need a long cable to reach the other wire at the extremities of the car.
You just, one at a time, connect the far end of each Red to the some bare metal on the bodywork enabling you to check each of the 4 ends you have at the Dash.
Or you can reverse that principle and connect to earth, one at a time, each of the Reds you have at the dash, and go around the car with the Meter checking out each one at the Front and Rear sidelights, the feed at the fuse holder and the Panel Lights.

Or you can just connect them together and hold your breath when turning the lights on the first time

Thanks everyone for your info I was going to meter the cables before fitting battery but I am away in Derbyshire at present so will get round to it next week thanks
