Am I about to get drummed out of the club? Are they really a no no \? I'm not a purist ! I can't afford new steel ones and am happy to do a bit of der-rusting and repair but the few I see are many hours drive away!

The good news is that they won't rust! The bad news is that they don't always fit too well. Many cars have them though. You won't be able to earth the front lights/indicators through the wing itself any more, like with steel wings, so will have to set up earth wires for them.

The truth is, once they are painted to match the car no one will know unless they try to stick a magnet to them.

Driver's side is fibreglass?

Ours has one of each too, didn't find the fiberglass one any different to fit than the steel one, I would expect the fronts to be more difficult as there is much more for them to fit too. At the end of the day it all comes down to the quality of the part, there is nothing fudamentaly wrong with composite parts, and they do have very obvious benefits wrt to corrosion.
Bootlids are a good example, take one from something like a Lotus and it is double skinned rigid and made of relatively thick material, take a look at whats offered for the minor and its a horrible floopy single skin thing..........
