Muriel Minor developed a regular knocking noise in her 1098 gearbox today.
Only occurs in 1st, 2nd and 3rd and reverse- knocking is related to speed.
Any thoughts?

It sounds like a laygear fault. 4th gear is direct connection of input shaft to output shaft so that would explain why you are not hearing a knocking in 4th.
It happened to my gearbox. A knocking became very loud and the car could not be driven. A tooth had broken off.
Your gearbox will need to be rebuilt or exchanged for a rebuilt gearbox. These are available from ESM or try Claire Atkinson Associates (she advertises in Minor Matters). Claire was very helpful when I had gearbox issues.

It does sound like it needs a rebuild, If you are so inclined they are not to difficult to rebuild, there is a great guide from the Dorset MMOC on here somewhere.

Thank you for your replies gentlemen.
As I suspected

. The gearbox was a John Evans recon box of about 20 years ago - I don't know whether he is still around?
Given the price of re-con boxes, a home rebuild is a distinct possibility! Luckily I have a spare so won't be off the road too long.
