Are they getting deeper and more frequent in your area?
On the narrow country roads they are becoming unavoidable. When full of water hard to know how deep and worse on unlit roads. My daughters Fiat 500 has lost 3 tyres in two weeks

Dread to think the damage that could be done to a poor old minor

Yes, its all this rain. And poor/untimely maintenance. I nearly went in one the other day, very deep....just managed to avoid it. Its been patched up now....plenty more left though.....

Oh they are AWFUL where I live… there are certain areas I actively avoid because I know that they would do so much harm to Nell if she fell in one. It’s so busy where I live traffic wise you can’t always avoid them either

The roads are all in a terrible state. Lack of investment and maintenance - plus more (and heavier) traffic of course.
Actually I find the Minor is better on potholed roads than my modern car. The Minor is narrow - and so are the tyres - and it is more nimble and able to avoid them

Tyre businesses are very busy currently with all the damaged tyres plus the fact that so many modern cars no longer carry spare wheels so they are called out more.
Modern cars with low profile tyres on ridiculously wide wheels are the worst by far. Fortunately I don't have such a thing. A deliberate choice.

Every winter potholes get worse but they seem worse than ever. Very dangerous. Burst tyres, buckled wheel rims but even more dangerous, people swerving to avoid the potholes. These electric cars are heavier than their internal combustion engine equivalents and it seems everybody needs to drive a car the size of a tank these days. Except Bill's daughter with her Fiat 500. Cute little car.

Lots of factors, including the inability of many drivers to actually 'read the road' these days and just go over them.
Low profile wheel/tyre combinations don't help either.
There was a guy on our local news a few days ago, reporting that he had damaged a wheel & tyre on a pothole.

But in his tale, he said he hit a pot hole with a 'bump' and then a few minutes later he went up a kerb to clear the way for a Police car on Blues, and that's when the tyre 'went'.

What was he doing going up a kerb to get out of the way of the Police vehicle, especially with low profile tyres? I bet he wasn't down to 1mph to mount the kerb.
Damn Fool.

But yes, there's plenty of potholes around.

I was over a few weeks ago and noticed just how bad they are now. Once I used to say that roads in Eastern Europe were the worst but with the exception of Hungary, Eastern European roads are better than they are in the UK!

Hungary is possible the only country that is on par with the UK for terrible road surfaces in Europe.

During the National Rally 2025, there was a Minor driving around with a sticker that said, “I'm not drunk, I'm avoiding potholes.” Compared to the Netherlands, where I live, the UK seems like an Eastern Bloc country.

Tijdens de National Rally 2025 reed er een Minor rond met een sticker "Ik ben niet dronken ik vermijd potholes". Het is in vergelijk met Nederland waar ik woon lijkt GB wel een Oostblok land.

I have to say though, round here, the local council are ALWAYS fixing the roads.. they just can’t keep up with the sheer volume of traffic in this area.We are kind of used to it, but whenever we holiday we always realise how chaotic driving in our town actually is!

We got through 9 tyres and 2 wheels in 2 years on our modern (a 2010 fiesta is modern for me), finally lost patience and replaced the 16" wheels and 45 profile tyres with 15" wheels and 60 profile tyres, it barely notices the pot holes now!

At this rate roads are going to become single track, some even on traffic lights as only one part of the road is safe from potholes

Here in the States, part of our problem is people who won't avoid hitting them when they ARE full of water, either failing to understand hydraulics or just not giving a fig about it. Water, being incompressible, has to go SOMEWHERE under the weight of a vehicle's wheel and tire, and this results in the pothole being enlarged every time it's struck. That, and a lack of funding to repair them, gives us a serious issue with them.

If you hit a pothole fast enough the wheel will skip over it and miss the back edge. Just sayin'

I don't think you could skip over the one in my picture in a fiat 500 even if you were doing the 20mph speed limit

whilst squeezing past parked cars.
