Morris Minor Owners Club

When I was 23 and had been driving my Minor daily for 6 years, I broke down on the outskirts of Edinburgh with a terminal gearbox failure. I called the AA and my car and I were relayed home to Worthing in West Sussex. A long trip (nearly 500 miles, 10 hours or so). My car was not considered to be safe to be towed so it was transported as in your photographs. I had all my worldly possessions in the car including a television set and my HiFi and speakers on the back seat.

The irony was that my Minor never actually drove from the South to Edinburgh in the first place. When I started at university in Edinburgh the Morris travelled by Motor-rail from London Euston, stayed there for 5 years whilst I was at medical school and then broke down on the way home only to be transported back on a low-loader. Poor thing. I remember driving round Hyde Park Corner and being somewhat terrified but we got to Euston unscathed with a frayed copy of the A to Z and road signs to guide us. No GPS back then.....but a huge number of cheap cigarettes smoked.

I have always wanted a Land Rover but I could never afford one. I want a SWB petrol that I can chuck two absolutely filthy German Shepherd Dogs in the back and hose the back out afterwards. I grew to love Land Rovers from the Scouts and then from working in Kenya 30 years ago.

No need freewheel front hubs one click and it's just two wheel drive to rear one click and back to 4 wheel drive.

there isnt a rear axle to be driven,
its independent rear, so the bed can drop between them,

Started from scratch its a 52 but I don't own it.

Way back in the 1970s I rebuilt a 1952 Series 1 80" wheel base Landrover from 2 virtually scrap Landrovers which had belonged to a farmer. The wear to the camshafts was so bad that there was hardly any cam lobes left. Back then you could still get new factory engine parts so the best engine was rebuilt using many new factory parts. At that time hoods were not available and I had to cut a sew a new hood myself. The spare front axle hubs, wheels and tyres were used for the axle of my self build car transporting trailer. I parted with that Landrover because the layshaft broke and at the time I could not afford to repair. My last Landrover was a Series 3 air-portable which I used for towing my current Brian James car transporter trailer. I sold the Ser 3 Landrover a few years back to a friend who finished the rebuild I had started which included a new galvanised chassis. He has just had returned after full rebuild the 1950 80" Ser 1 that took him and his wife on honeymoon to the south of France many many years ago. He has several other Landrovers. He and his family are Landrover enthusiast of the first degree.

Landrover is J registration likely new when pictured.
