Happy New Year all.
Oil Pumps? no not that oil pump but the 12V ones you can buy that suck the old oil out of the engine through the dipstick hole negating the need to messily drain through the sump plug.
Any good or should i give them a wide berth?
Thanks

I don't use it on my Minor, but I do have one of those hand pump vacuum extractors which I have used successfully on my daily driver. Sealy branded.
Oil needs to be warm - not hot, for it to extract fully.
You still have to crawl under/raise the car (Minor) to change the oil filter which is also "messy".

I have a Sealey oil extractor too. I use it on my modern Audi which has a fragile composite material sump prone to cracking when the sump plug is removed or replaced. This is the way the Audi mechanics change the oil. Some modern cars have no sump drain plug at all.......
For the Morris I would always change the oil the normal way. The A-series is an old design of engine that does not use modern fancy super expensive oils. I don't think pumping the old oil out is sufficient to flush out the rubbish. Warm engine and out with the sump plug!

I would not use them on any vehicle which has a drain plug. If there is no drain plug then an alternative method was obviously intended by the manufacturer.
Using one on a vehicle with a drain plug has no guarantee that it is removing all the old oil.
You have no idea what route the oilway has and if the suction pipe is getting obstructed.
When I lived in Nevada (15+ yrs ago) there were drive in places just for oil changes as the desert dust environment required frequent replacement. Six months typically the max for oil and air filter change.
On some fwd models they would remove a complete sump cover plate to drain the oil rather than wait for it to trickle out the drain plug.

Agreed. Its best to - as in the lyrics of the old song - "get out and get under"!

I have one, one advantage is you can quickly do an "in between" oil change,
every other time I drop the oil from underneath,

This was what I was thinking about. The easier it is to do something the more chance there is that i'll do it!
Thanks for the advice all.
