Gearbox rear seal.

I am in the process of renewing the rear seal on my '71 van and I just wondered if I needed to treat the felt seal on the rear part of the seal with anything before fitting please.
The rubber seal inside I'll smear some grease around but should the felt part be soaked in oil or something first?
Many thanks for any help or pearls of wisdom you can send my way.

Graham.

P.S. How does anyone remove the old one without a 4 post lift, what an absolute nightmare that was.

It will help the longevity of the felt if the seal is left soaking overnight in new engine oil before fitting.
The seal can be easily removed without the use of a 4 post lift by using the correct BMC tool.
The correct tool is Pt No: 18G389 (basic tool) and remover adapter Pt No: 18G389.
They are obtainable S/H from 'e' bay or other sources. I picked mine up way back at a local autojumble quite cheaply (£8) as the seller did not know what the tool was for - but I did. The correct tool makes the job so so much easier. The only dismantling involved is the removal of the prop shaft.
I also have the adapter for the 'B' series gearbox rear seal.

Thank you for your reply Phil, I shall do as you suggest then.
As for removal, all I can suggest to anyone who needs to do this job is find the special tool any way that
you can because it's not easy without.
Thanks again

Graham.

The link below shows the basic tool (Pt No: 18G389) fitted with the Jaguar threaded adapter. There are several threaded adapters of different sizes for use with the basic tool which just screw onto the bottom of the basic tool. The adapter you need is Pt No: 18G389A.
I do not know the part number or size of the Jaguar adapter or if it can be used on the Minor gearbox.
