Recommended Duct Tape (for the door plastic sheeting) ?

I finally got out to my Minor after a long hiatus and discovered the duct tape I'd used to secure the plastic sheeting that goes under the interior door panels was coming away.

The original black duct tape that had been applied in the past had lasted many years, and was still so sticky that I ended up with a ball of plastic sheeting that couldn't be separated (which is why new duct tape and sheeting were applied).

So, I just wondered if there was a good tape that was recommended for this application, one that keeps the plastic on and the moisture out and also won't damage the paint when removed.

Tape?
Would it not be held in place with a thin bead of mastic material?
The sheet is basically the same size as the door card, so I don't see how tape would do the job? Double sided perhaps

As background information, the car originally had nothing behind the door cards.

After restoration, I discovered they'd put plastic sheeting (the same material as a normal shopping bag, but with trademarks to show it was some automotive product) in place, held with duct tape.

The plastic sheeting is just slightly larger than the access hole area for access to the window mechanisms etc.

Tape was then applied on all four sides of the plastic, with holes punched through it for the door card clips to go through, so the duct tape made up the size of the door card.

I did it this way again with new, sturdier plastic sheet and again the duct tape, so it looks like this (albeit with tape on all four sides, and holes that don't go all over the place):

I'm very happy with Gorilla Tape which comes in black or clear. Applied dry (and preferably warm) it sticks to just about anything. It is not particularly cheap but is way better than a lot of tapes now sold as gaffer tape. It has even lasted two years so far on the underside of our boat.

Real gaffer tape is similar but finding it not so easy.

I'm sure other 'primate tapes' are available!

Yes, I've previously looked in the parts lists and seen there was nothing. They did stick fabric over some of the holes though.

Ah, didn't know that - I guess then that it's now put in place to prevent the soggy, mouldy door panels from occuring.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I'm on the flip side from your experience in that I've had less luck with primate products than most. It wouldn't have been so bad if not for the price and that (in the last instance of using their products) the tape I'd bought was designed for usage far beyond what I was asking of it yet failed pretty quickly.

I guess the general consensus will be, any decent named brand of tape, but I figured I'd ask - I realise it's not an everyday job to do

Yes they stuck a kind of fabric tape over some of the holes and then painted them! This is my car door and it has never been repainted since it left the factory.


The plastic membrane was to stop the plywood door card backing from getting damp I think? Damp warps the plywood.

I would suggest cleaning the surface carefully with a degreaser before applying your tape. I have had good results with Gorilla brand.

I re-discovered a fabric tape similar (though of course not in such large patches) to the above factory style cloth shown in svenedins' photos. I figured since I've experienced trying to remove the stuff in the past (it sticks very well, but does remove) and is waterproof it might be perfect for the task and it's the same price as the non-waterproof duct tapes that are out there.

I'll report back once I do the work to show how good (or bad) it was for the task.

I have used gorrilla tape for a while, even if it gets wet it seems to last,
