Yes it compresses the Bendix spring which enables the Bendix assembly to be safely removed from the starter motor. This is a useful tool to have as stuck Bendix gear is often caused by dirt and oil contamination. In order to clean up the Bendix assembly properly it must be removed from the starter motor. Improvised methods for compressing the spring are dangerous and should not be attempted.

Yes, and that is the correct one for the spring on the Minor Starter.

Last year on here, Phil clarified the correct part number, because there are 2 sizes: viewtopic.php?p=701943#p701943

I can again clarify those number as I have both the JWP376 and the JWP366 versions with dedicated spanners attached and in very good condition original Sykes Pickavant branded boxes.

Having one of the these tools enabled me to go on Minors on Tour when I might not have made it. The starter jammed and when I removed the starter motor it was clear that the Bendix was sticking. I didn't have a spare good starter so disassembled the Bendix gear having used the spring compressor to compress the spring so that I could remove the circlip. After everything was cleaned up and degreased, then lubricated with dry PTFE lubricant we were good to go to France!
