I imagine part of the function is to act as a buffer/anti rattle rubber?

Yes. You need to glue it on with some contact adhesive.

Thanks both. I forgot to mention that my clutch is hydraulic. I've not had anything to do with the mechanical linkage but I imagine there may be more freeplay with the hydraulic, so the pedal may need to sit a tad higher? I have one of the newer Frontline clutches and it is bit thicker than some. Anyway, with a 7/8" master cylinder, I have got more clutch movement, for a given amount of pedal movement.
I'll bear that in mind about the pad. I have some contact adhesive.
